Instead of buying all the treats for your family this year at the store, below are two treats you can make yourself at home using apples.
Gourmet Caramel Candy Apples
Everyone has heard of candy apples but you may have not considered making some gourmet candy apples. Before you get started, wash the apples very well to remove any type of waxy coating that may be on them. You will need some small wooden sticks like the sticks for popsicles. It is easier to stick these sticks into the apples when the apples are cold.
First, find your favorite homemade caramel recipe, which is much better than the caramel you can buy at the store.
Dip your apples into the caramel and place them on a silicone sheet. The caramel does need to set before you start decorating them. To test this, gently touch the caramel and if it still feels wet and gooey it is not set. Instead, the caramel should not come off on your finger. Do not worry as the caramel will never harden too much.
Now it is time to decorate your apples. You can do this any way you choose. For example, dip the apples in granola or nuts or dip half the apple into melted chocolate. You can pipe icing to drizzle designs on the apples to make them look unique. Because it is Halloween you could pipe the icing to make scary eyes on the apples.
To make these ghost apples you will need two bags of white candy melts, wooden sticks, six apples, and 1/4 cup of semisweet chocolate chips. First, scrub your apples to ensure they are clean. Remove the stems on the apples and place a wooden stick where the stem used to be.
Put the white candy melts into a microwave safe bowl and microwave them for about a minute. At this time stir the candy melts and then cook for a couple minutes more. When you are finished, they should be completely smooth.
Dip each apple into the melted candy making sure the entire apple is coated. Place the apples on a baking sheet lined with wax paper. Put the apples in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to chill.
Put the chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl and microwave them on high for a couple of minutes until they are completely smooth. Stop every 30 seconds and stir the chocolate.
Place the chocolate into the corner of a zip lock bag. Use some scissors to cut a small hole in the corner of the bag the chocolate is in. Pipe a mouth and some eyes on each apple. When you are finished, place the apples back in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes and they will then be ready to serve.
Both of these treats are very easy to make and when you are done it will look like you purchased them instead of making them yourself. For more ideas, stock up on yummy candies through companies like Abdallah Candies And Gifts.
